Site History
The Antonoff family has had a long connection with the property at 1300-1390 South Colorado Blvd. The patriarch of the family, Ben Antonoff, built the historic Century 21 Theater and the White Spot coffee shop in 1967. After using the Disney classic “Snow White” for test runs, the theater opened in style with a showing of Peter Seller’s James Bond spoof “Casino Royale.” Opening night was quite the social scene as throngs of people turned out for the occasion.
Many Denverites recall lines of excited moviegoers wrapping around the north and east sides of the theater waiting to be admitted to a new first run movie.
When the theater closed in 1990 with a showing of the “Last Emperor” so, too, did a chapter of Denver’s history. The theater’s twenty years were home to cheers for “Star Wars,” laughs during “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and tears throughout “Lassie.”
25 years have passed since the Century 21 Theater closed. Since that day, SoundTrack, which became Ultimate Electronics, has been the sole tenant in the property. The former White Spot became a Hooters restaurant. In the almost 50-year history of the previously existing buildings on this property, each building has housed only 2 tenants. The endurance of those users vividly demonstrates the strength of the South Colorado Boulevard trade area.
